Happy Earth Day!

Well today is Earth Day and there are lots of celebrations going on around the city of Toronto. It’s good to see that more and more people are giving a hoot about the environment.

On a somewhat related (at least I think it’s related) note, tomorrow (April 23, 2007) marks the beginning of TV Turnoff Week. For thos of you who are unfamiliar with TV Turnoff Week, here’s a little excerpt from the Adbusters website:

The idea is simple: take your TV, your DVD player, your video iPod, your XBOX 360, your laptop, your PSP, and say goodbye to them all for seven days. Simple, but not at all easy. Like millions of others before you, you’ll be shocked at just how difficult – yet also how life-changing – a week spent unplugged can really be.

For those that know me, you’re probably thinking that I’m not going to be able to stay away from video games (especially my Wii) So this week is going to be a bit of an undertaking. And given that I have an addictive personality, it’ll be interesting to see what I use as a substitute for this lack of being plugged in.

Here are the ground rules, I’m setting for myself:

  • No TV watching at home or while out and about – This will be particularly hard, since my favourite show Heroes comes back from its hiatus this week). And if I’m out with friends, I will try to place myself so I’m not staring directly at a television set.
  • No Video Game Playing on my commute to and from work – Normally I bring my DS with me to play on the commute to work. This one won’t be so hard to do, because I can just bring a copy of Adbusters or Spacing or a book with me to read.
  • No Video Game Playing at home – This’ll be tough seeing as how I have the Wii in my bedroom, but I guess I can move it down to my parents’ living room for the week to avoid the temptation.

I’ll still be checking email, blogging, (generally using computers seeing as how I work with computers) and using my cellphone. So while I won’t be completely unplugged, I’ll for the most part be cutoff from the media saturated world.

If you’re interested in participating in TV Turnoff Week 2007 be sure to check out adbusters.org for more information on what it is and what you can do to participate.
