Hybrid cars reach point of affordability

Honda Insight ConceptUp until now, owning a hybrid vehicle was something for green celebrities or the much wealthier among the masses.  On March 24th, the idea of hybrids only being for those who could really afford it may no longer be true.

According to an article on Planet Green, Honda is set to introduce it’s hybrid Insight, with a MSRP of $19,800.00.  While, this may still be pricey in these economic times, it is much more affordable than other hybrid cars already out on the market.

By way of comparison, Ford’s Fusion hybrid starts at around $27,000, and the most bare bones model of the infamous Prius starts around at least $22,000.

This is big news. There are two major obstacles hybrids have faced in gaining traction in the US market: a) an expensive price tag—that’s the obvious one. But also, there’s b) the idea that hybrids are only for wealthy liberal “elites.”

Could a more affordable price tag, bring the hybrid to the masses?
Well let’s just hope that those who are currently on the market for a new car, are apt to go for a hybrid.
