It’s been a month since I finished Adbusters Digital Detox Week campaign. I had to slightly adjust the rules to fit my life, but it wasn’t so bad living without certain technology and engaging in the outside world. Of course the beautiful weather that we had gotten in Toronto at the time helped things out tremendously.
Since the digital detox, I have partaken in some side experiments. In 2 previous posts, I had discussed what it was like to go 12 hours without my cellphone. Probably not a daunting task to many individuals, but in a digital age, where we have become obliviously dependant on technology it can be a challenge.
Part of my digital detox, included not logging in to Facebook, which I have to admit has been great. I have logged in for a couple of minutes, since finishing up the detox, but I have to come to realize that my life does not [need to] revolve around Facebook.
Yes, I’ll admit that I used to be one of those people that would constantly add friends. And by friends I mean people I’ve met once through an actual friend. But that quickly stopped. Then I became one of those people that just had to know what people were up to on a daily basis. I quikcly found that to be a rather banal activity and that keeping up on the minutaea of people’s lives wasn’t all that exciting.
Will I ever login to Facebook again? Well, yes. I already have logged in, but I won’t spend copious amounts of time on it like I used to. Will I delete my Facebook account? I don’t know. It’s served it’s purpose in allowing me to connect with friends and plan events with those friends. I suppose that if I do have their phone numbers I could always give them a call…
