The not-so-beneficial-ness of organics?

Despite the recent recession, there has been a boom in the organic products market particularly organic food.  People seem to want to eat more organic food, whether it is for health reasons, or because of the practices involved in organic food having a less detrimental impact on our environment, or because they can taste a difference in the food.

Whatever the reasoning, the market for organic foods has boomed over the last few years.

However, according to a study conducted by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, organic food has no nutritional or health benefits over ordinary food.

“A small number of differences in nutrient content were found to exist between organically and conventionally produced foodstuffs, but these are unlikely to be of any public health relevance,” said Alan Dangour, one of the report’s authors.

“Our review indicates that there is currently no evidence to support the selection of organically over conventionally produced foods on the basis of nutritional superiority.”

While there may not be any nutritional benefits to organic foods over conventional foods, there still is the environmental impact associated with growing/producing the food, which can’t be said for conventional food.

With most people tightening the purse strings though, they will be pleased to know that they don’t have to feel guilty from a nutritional health standpoint about not always buying organic.
